gamma too bright on VCR/DVD recorder

I bought a cheap Emerson VCR and the picture was way too bright. No big deal but now I'm having the same problem with a Magnavox DVD recorder/VCR combo. Others units play fine. Am I missing a setting or plugging something in to the wrong hole or with wrong cables? The gamma is way too far toward bright.

Check and see if there is a "black level" option. My pioneer recorder has "0 IRE" or "7.5 IRE" settings.
