Is it possible with a combo like this that I will be able to record a DVD from the VHS?

Yes, that's probably why most people buy them.
But it won't copy commercial VHS tapes protected with Macrovision.

It's mostly home videos I wanna record. Another question, how many hours will the DVD hold? I know they say 2 hours, but giving the quality along with the compression I doubt it will record the whole 6HR tape.

  4. Depends what you want, just an archive copy of a vhs or a really nice conversion fron analog vhs to dvd.

Most on this forum are perfectionists, I have seen some images that would send the majority screaming, but others might be happy.

Certainly anything over 2 hours on a dvd will degrade the quality, so I would recommend just recording the 6 hr vhs on 3 dvd's.

Get a combo from somehere you can return it if you are unhappy, what were you considering?

Combo machines have all kinds of problems, be it inferior VCRs or just lousy image quality. Many more refuse to make DVDs from the tapes, regardless of them being homemade or retail.

Best solution is a good VCR, a TBC (or semi-TBC filter device) in between, with a good DVD recorder or capture card in a computer for the recording aspect.

Some of the DVDs consumers/home users make are dreadful. I've seen some images where I'd be tempted to punch myself in the face, in the hopes I would pass out and not have to watch it. I've also heard audio so bad that dogs literally start to howl and cats leave the room.
