Converting AVI fullscreen to AVI widescreen?

I've been using WINAVI and it worked well but for some reason when i tried another conversion of the same kind the movie was blocky in the preview window. Is this a problem with WINAVI or can anyone recommend a better program that i can use to convert AVI full screen to widescreen?

The video quality mainly depends what video codec and bitrate you use. Just avi doesn't say anything. And how do you convert to widescreen? just cropping the video?

I have no idea,but i normally use WINAVI to convert an AVI to AVI but changing the 4:3 to 16:9 in the advanced menu. I've never encounted problems before and i'm thinking that maybe it needs recoding or something.

WHy are you converting to 16:9? you can use a software player like mpc and force it to 16:9 or zoom.

So what? Are you saying you cut off the top and bottom of the video just so it'll fill your TV screen? A zoom can do that anyway, but why?

The video doesn't look good in the 4:3 format,it seems that its stretched vertically on my tv so thats why i wanted it in 16:9 format.

Am i making sense?

You should be able to change the setting on your tv so it doesn't stretch it. And how do you play the avi? using a standalone dvd player?

Yeah,i have a divx dvd player and it plays most things including AVI.

I haven't tried the TV changing the ratio or anything.I might try that.

If what you're saying is that the AVI was encoded badly to begin with, and some dolt made fullscreen what should have been widescreen, then that makes sense. But...

You've done several like this? So you've downloaded several with the wrong aspect ratio? That's pretty unusual, you know. Or maybe there's something wrong with your player. You're playing to the widescreen TV set through a DVD/MPEG-4 player? Are you sure you have it set up to output for 16:9, rather than the default 4:3?

No no no,What it is is that i've downloaded the James Bond movies which is in avi but are in full screen. The first 2 i converted worked great without no blocky pictures at all and play brilliantly on my DVD player in widescreen 16:9. But the others that i have been downloading which are in the exact same format play fine as a full screen but when i tried to convert them they where too blocky as in you couldn't make out the video at all.

You are in breach of the forum rules and are being issued with a formal warning.
