I just recently purchased a Gateway computer that has a DVD burner. I am new to this burning procedure but wanted to back up my DVD movies on a 1:1 ratio so they will not look grainy/blocky during certain parts of the movies.

I am using DVD Shrink 3.2 to create my VIDEO_TS folder and have the selection DVD-9 selected for my Dual Layer DVDs. I also unchecked the "Remove layer break"

I get problems when I use Nero. I know people don't like Nero but I didn't have a problem making the back up when I used a Single Layer DVD+R, just a DL DVD+R. I use Memorex Brand.

I'm going to try to provide all I can and maybe you can help me find my problem.

On Nero this is what is says my device is:

When I burn this is what I get:

Any Ideas? Does my burner not support DL? Is there a setting I am missing?

    Thank you for any advice.

Try burning with IMGBurn instead, and use Verbatim DVD+R DL media... Shrink does a poor job of dealing with layer break!!! search the forums, and you'll see others will agree..... good luck.

I have not yet gotten a successful burn with Ricoh DL media.

Unlike your results, mine fail halfway through the second layer with every tool I've tried.

Your drive appears not to like the media at all. Failing on the leadin. Discussion of layer breaks is irrelevant.

PureBurn - If you REALLY want your burns to work, I am going to give you some blunt advice.

    1) Do NOT burn with Nero. Until you are willing to stop using Nero, you are wasting your time. Did you know that Nero didn't set the layer break correctly and some say it's never been fixed? Take a look at:
    http://www.digital-digest.com/~blutach/pgcedit_guide/burning_with_pgcedit/burning_with...pgcedit_v2.htm
for an explanation as to why you should NEVER EVER use Nero to burn DVDs. DVD Shrink is bad news too. If you must use DVD Shrink, you better use PgcEdit to make an ISO and then burn it with ImgBurn. There are GOOD reasons why people don't like Nero. You would do well to read my link and learn some of them.
    2) Stop using crap media! Seriously, if you aren't willing to buy Verbatim DL +R DVD discs, you might as well not even be burning. Take a look at:
    http://www.nomorecoasters.com
for a discussion on good/bad media.

If you are unwilling to address problems 1 & 2, then good luck to you because you will need it. I am not trying to offend you but I am trying to be blunt to get you to understand that there is a better way to do this that works.

If you read all his post you would see he has moved to imgburn for burning, but still failed. this confirms that he needs to move to better media.

If you read and understood either the nero or the imgburn logs you would realize that the problem was drive/media incompatibility not the burning software. The diagnosis would be equivalent with either log alone.

If I saw any reports of a drive model which was successful with Ricoh DL media I would suggest seeking a drive which was compatible with that media.

Since I can't I suggest he move to a media which has a history of success with his model drive. If there is one.

I have a spindle of SONY labeled Ricoh DL media that I test whenever I have access to another drive model. So far nothing has succeeded in burning it.

In my experience the problems solved by burning with imgburn relate to successful execution of DVDs with menus on DVDplayers and software players. I see no difference based on the position of the layer break on any movie only DVDs I have burned, but these tests have had only one soundtrack and no subtitles.

Needless to say your experience may differ.

So I decided to splurge and buy some Verbatim DL disks and retry to burn with ImgBurn. Didn't have a problem.

Thanks for the help.....now my question is:

How come people don't like DVD shrink to create their VIDEO_TS? What is the advantage of an ISO created by another program then just what DVD shrink can do.

    Anyhelp would be great thanks.....

My movie is playing now to see if the breaks are any good.
