    Hello there,

I am considering buying an internal dvd writer and placing it into an enclosure, so i have an external burner.

Could anyone tell me what size enclosure would be sufficiant? I'm considering the Pioneer 111 which seems to be a popular choice on here... are they 5.25" or 2.5",,, also would an enlosure with a fan be better than without.

    Thank you very much.

DVD writers are 5.25". A DVD is bigger than a 2.5" diameter.

If you are going to use the drive a lot get an enclosure with a fan. DVDwriters get hot in use.

If you have a media preference (other than TY) or wish to buy whatever media is on sale that week, consider an LG drive. Checking the DVDmedia reports (link at left) LG drives are among the most tolerant of CMC and other media types which Pioneer owners are tempted to call "crap media". This is consitant with my experience.

If you intend to use Toyo Yuden or Verbatim media your can use the Pioneer or almost any other drive.

You might also what to get an enclosure that has both USB 2.0 and Firewire. Having both gives you more flexibility now and in the future and the price is only a few bucks more

I would stay away from super-cheap no-name enclosures. They might be OK for a regular DVD RoM, but if you are going to put in a burner you'll want an enclosure that is intended to work with DVD burners.

I have my burner (Pioneer 109) in an enclosure and find it works great.

Do a search at CdFreaks.com to find out which enclosure would be the best for the PIONEER 111 drive. Some enclosures don't always work with dvd burners. Enclosures use different chipsets which some are not compatible with certain brands of internal dvd burners. You'll need a 5.25 enclosure for your drive. BTW the PIONEER 111 is a good choice.

Here's a link from CdFreaks.com regarding external enclosures.

  5. It is better to buy an external DVD-writer, then do it yourself. Some external USB->IDE case have problem writing a specific type of Disc, like DVD+R/W, under a certain OS.

The link you have identified is to a commodity case. Probably sold under many names.

Check UK dealers for a case with Prolific Chipset and you probably will have found the same case or its close relation.
