  1. I recorded from a ntsc vhs(Commercial tape) to ntsc dvd recorder(JVCM100 at 720 x 480)),then took that dvd-rw and used tmpg express used the source wizard to extract the mpeg, then set output to 352 x 576 for pal to match the pal capture I had of the rest of this series.

I have used tmpg express many times for ntsc/pal and backwards but this time got a regular jumpy picture, bit like macrovision, BUT...the original ntsc dvd-rw plays fine and if I use a dvd player to output pal and record that on my uk jvc dvd recorder it is also not jumpy, not such good picture but not jumpy.

Did I do wrong to go from 720x480 to 352x576 ?

    Ideas from you great guys-thanks

    Two things to consider

    1. Field order. Did you accidentally reverse it when you did you resize and re-encode

    2. You used the wrong method to resize. What method did you use ?

My money would be on field order.

Simple test, if you still have the mpeg. Use ReStream to reverse the field order, then play it back. If things are fixed, that was the problem. If not, time to look at suggestion 2.

Filed order can be either Top Field First (TFF) or Bottom Field First (BFF). DV is BFF, analogue capture cards usually use TFF. I don't know what order your DVD recorder used. Trouble is, tmpgenc might not know either. If it picked the wrong field order, then you can get jittery playback. There are a few long discussions around the forums on the best way to determine true field order for unknown material, and the best method appears to be by eye. Not for the faint hearted.

The good news is - field order is consistent. If your recorder uses BFF, it will always use BFF. So once you work out what you have, you can deal with it going forward. I would still start with restream as it is quick and easy, and does no damage. Worst case, I'm wrong and the video is no better.
