I am going to purchase a new mini DV camcorder and found several that fit the bill but have only USB 2.0 for capturing. I have been using Firewire up to now so all my applications are geared for that. What I'd like to know is several things:
1. Can USB 2.0 capture without dropping frames?
2. Does Premier Pro 1.0 capture via USB?
3. What other applications available can capture via USB 2.0?
I am thinking firewire is a better method of capturing DV but will wait to see if you all have the correct info.
Thanks.

DV over USB2 is usually not supported by applications except by software shipped with the product. The high end camcorders operate as a network node and transfer under network protocol or they emulate a remote drive.
The HVX200 uses flash memory and can connect over USB2 like other other flash cards for file transfer. It can't feed live video like a typical DV camcorder that way so forget A/V pass through unless you use IEEE-1394.
IEEE-1394 remains a standard interface and works well with many applications. USB is ad hoc and proprietary. You get what they say you will get in the spec if you use their software. -
I am considering the yet to be released Sony DCR-SR200. It records to 40G hard drive and downloads to a computer via their docking station. What I don't know is the file extension but I think it is MPEG2. I am thinking about the HDD camcorders as I have owned a digital camera for years and really like the idea of recording to HD instead of tape. I put most all movies on DVD these days anyway.

I have a HDD cam...it captures via USB2...there are no dropped frames...The quality is not bad at all.. It is easy to edit...
I also have a mini-dv cam....
The capture quality is MUCH higher..
The "finished" product...a dvd played on your TV....you will probably not see a differance...
I highly recommend a HDD cam......
