OK so I have some dvds with both ntsc and pal titles. they are family home movies I authored a few years ago off of various video cameras while traveling. I don't have original avis etc, just the vobs on dvds I authored through dvdshrink.

Here is the phenomena: When I play these on my panasonic dvd player output through component they are fine. transitioning from the ntsc to pal files results in not problem. but when I output through s-video the pal sections have extreme color distortion (extreme blue skin tones).

this has come up since on the setup I am using I need the monitors component input for something other than the dvd player.

I don't want to be switching component cables as they are behind a wall mount. rather than a dedicated component switch I was thinking of picking up an inexpensive receiver, as one can find them with several component inputs for around $70.

Is it expected that s video would be screwing up the pal and component would be playing it fine? or is something else going on?

  2. Does your DVD player have a setting for s-video vs component output? If it does set it to s-video. Sometimes the s-video output is undefined when the player set to output component.

no. it does have settings for progressive enabled or disabled but nothing specific to svideo v component. The manual http://service.us.panasonic.com/OPERMANPDF/DVDS47.PDF implies it does not support pal. but in fact it does -but seemingly only through component with proper colors. does this make sense?
