trying to set up some buttons in Encore similiar to the ones on hous of 1000 corpses. Not sure how they do it, first they are roll overs but only on one area of the screen. I thought they were using auto activate but not sure, the interaction is really really fast, and when I try using auto activation to swap menus it takes a considerable amount of time to change.
anyone have a chance to check out the menu on the dvd and look at the buttons with captain spaldings head lookin around, give it a shot as to how you think they may have done it, since the background is a video clip.

You don't say what package you are using. Most will allow you to create switched menus, but each menu page is a separate menu, and as you have noticed, it can slow to react. DVD Lab Pro 2.x allows for the creation of switched menus using menu cells, so each page is still within the same menu. Switching is much faster.

You also need to allow for the fact that in many players, accessing burned DVDs is much slower than accessing commercially pressed discs due to the lower reflectivity of the discs.

You still do switched menus in Encore, but the delay will be a little longer. The other issue is that delay will vary from player to player. Some will be quick, some will be very noticeable. A small number of players do sometimes have trouble with multi-cell menus, so even the DLP solution isn't foolproof.
