Let's keep this one to ourselves, as it can serve as a cool holiday gift. It won't be cool if everybody knows about it, though. Please don't post the url around until January, 'mkay ?

Upload your image to the online app and tell it your desired dimensions (ie a living room wall). It then upsizes the picture to a mosaic like series of 8.5x11" sheets of paper - all contained in a multi-page PDF file. Print the PDF out, and voila - you're Sandy Warhol. Owners of Inkjet printers, get ready to be depleted Use good quality paper, otherwise the saturated portions of the image will have a tendency to curl and bubble as they are drying from the massive amount of ink applied to them.

...or better yet, get the downloadable version and do it all offline and avoid the bandwidth hassles and time lag.

  5. Another idea would be to have a printing company do the job.

Here is a link to the price list at BigPosters.com

Another idea..... Print your own, but print VERY light, barely able
to be seen. Then paint over the papers with oils or acrylics.

Seems like the pro printers would be the cheapest. They can also
    use UV inks.

Let's take it one level further.

Now THAT is a brilliant idea, especially for one of the smaller posters. Thanks.

  7. I'll go off-topic a bit....

Trompe Loeil is something that is interesting, and can be done
the same way that has been discussed in this thread....
    ...but on a smaller scale!!

John Pugh is a master. The 2 photos below are his work.
They are painted onto the buildings, including shadows, highlights, people, etc.
(The columns are PAINTED onto the building!!!)

    Pugh's site is here...

Another Tromp Loeil master is Yves Lanthier.

Here are 2 links to before and after photos.

I don't have a Mac and don't know if you can use it on a Windows PC.
I didn't have time to read his entire blog.

Edit...... This program might work for Windows.
Didn't have time to read it all.

Reason they don't post the pricing is because it's intimidatingly expensive. However if you consider the costs of some ink cartridges for home printers to piece together a large poster versus just printing it at FedEx Kinko's on a single sheet (60" wide by up to 100' long) then the cost may be justifiable. Just make sure to have either vector art (best) or high resolution image (200dpi minimum when sized). Costs are about $10 per sq-ft for paper, $6 per sq-ft for this poly material that sometimes works (best used with line art rather than photos), or $12-15 for premium papers and canvas. They have a watercolor-texture paper that sometimes looks really cool when combined with the right photo and a well-placed watercolor filter. Some of the specialized sign places for Kinko's (only a dozen in the country so far) have machines that will print full color directly on foam-core or even metal, plastic, and wood as long as it's less than 1.75" and has the right smooth surface to print on. I downloaded the Rasterbator program but when I open up the folder and click the rasterbator icon I get a message reading:

'the application failed to initialize (0xc0000135). click on ok to terminate the application'

I think I need .NET framework but im not sure what that is and dont know if its compatable with SP1

Yes, you need .NET framework. You can download it here

It should be compatible with SP1, but the easiest way to find out is to try...

Nothing too new really, CAD programs usually have printing options that allow for "Tiled" printing.

I have seen full sized vinyl stickers printed/plotted out for layout of some "tricky" construction elements and used as templates for sign lettering and such.

I kind of kick myself for not getting in on an oppertunity to print out vinyl graphics for advertising. How was I supposed to know that the guy would land an account for McDonalds. (Bummer)
IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT?
