  1. I've looked through the list of DVD recorders and most of them are available only in Europe. Are there any recorders w/ a harddrive and can play DivX available in N. America? I e-mailed Lite-on America 3 months back and they "claim" something was in the works and to expect something in March, and nothing's materialized.

Pioneer's DVR-640H is supposed to be available in June and it will play DivX video burned to CD media.

  3. thanks for the response. is there some legal reason why these players aren't more widely available in the states? Hopefully, when the Pioneer becomes available other companies will follow suit.

I don't believe there is any any legal issue (other than the manufacturer's willingness to pay a licensing fee). There are many cheap DVD players that play DivX. But a DVD recorder with HDD has a lot of complexity and DivX has become popular in only the past couple years, so it just has taken time for it to become a priority to add this feature that only a small percentage of consumers likely will use. Now if it recorded DivX, that would be really nice.

The LG LRH-539 HDD/DVD combo recorder with 250GB hard disk is sold in Canada. I assume it's also available in the US, but you can check the website here

It's not listed as one of the models on the U.S. site here: http://us.lge.com/products/category/list/tv|audio|video_digital%20video.jhtml

yes i have an xbox setup with xbox media centre and an 80gb hdd. but the other advantage with the xbox is what i do. you connect it via network to your pc and rip dvds to your pc as one ISO file and then you can play them on the xbox direct from the pc so you can turn your dvd collection into a dvd jukebox and never change a disc again. on demand dvds if you will. i have about 100 dvds on my pc as iso so i just turn on the xbox and browse my online library and play. same with divx files ect.

Not a chance. There might be players but no recorders.

  13. Wal-Mart is carrying a Philips DVDR-3455H that advertises Divx compatability. $298. Just saw it at my local store today.

I bought a Philips DVDR3455H. It is an ok machine. I also own a Panasonic DMR-EH50S which is by far a superior machine, though it has been discontinued and replaced with an even better model... no doubt. The Panasonic is better especially when it comes to editing. If you want to edit out commercials the process is flawless. On the Philips it is very poor. It amounts to what it calls hiding. Here's the drill, you get in edit mode and the screen message says press[ok] to mark the beginning of what you want to hide. So I do that and after I press [ok] then it says press [ok] to mark the end of the section you wish to hide. But as I fast forward to the end of the commercial it sometimes times out and goes back to "Press [ok] to begin" and I cannot seem to change it to an End rather than a Beginning marker. I called the company and they did not have a solution for it. In my opinion it is just about worthless as an editor. The Panasonic people do it right and it works wonderfully, my next purchase of a DVD/HDD recorder will definitely be Panasonic.

If anyone has a hack solution for this problem with the Philips I would love to hear about it.
