Not that I know of. Just tried, and neither built in DVD player nor SMS media player do.

Basicall, just Video DVD. Using SMS, it can play DivX/XviD avi, mp3 (+ other formats too, I think)

Playing video (avi or even dvd vob) and mp3 on the ps2 can harm the eyepiece of the ps2?

Bad/low quality media may put more strain on the laser focus mechanism, yes. Most mod chips have a laser burnout protection built in tho, to minimize the risk.

  8. Ps2's don't read vcd. I think that someone put out a media software package that does though.
