Ok I'll describe this as best as possible.

Im currently authoring with Nero Vision. I've added a bunch of video files to my DVD compilation, and during playback I am unable to use the 'Next Track' button (software or hardware player) to goto the next video. The only way I can select a different video is to go to the Root menu and select another chapter. So if I choose not to create a title menu, the only way to watch the tracks is to let start from the beginning and play through, and I am unable to skip through any of them. Does anyone have any idea why I cant use the "Skip" or "Next" buttons ? or another way I can compile this DVD (while also re-encoding the media) and allow me to skip through my tracks without resorting to the title menu during playback ?

I explained this as best as I can.. im fairly new to DVD authoring. Any assistance is much appreciated. Cheers!

I'm surprised that nobody has gotten back to you yet. Unfortunately for you, the consensus around here is that Nero sucks for everything but burning. I realize this doesn't answer your question (and I don't have a copy of Nero Vision to tell you what to do - it didn't come with my OEM copy of Nero), but here's what I would recommend if you want good quality as cheaply as possible:

    1. Use TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 for encoding your AVI to an M2V file (this is MPEG-2 video only, no Audio). This is available for less than $40.
    2. Use FFMpegGUI to create an AC3 file which will be the sound for your DVD. This is freeware.
    3. Use DVDAuthorGUI (also freeware) to combine your M2V and AC3 files and author your DVD.
    4. Use ImgBurn to burn your DVD.

I've used QuEnc in place of TMPGEnc for some MPEG encodes, but I've had a few of them choke in DVDAuthorGUI. To save time, I've gone back to TMPG for the encoding to MPEG as I've never had DVDAuthorGUI choke on an M2V output from TMPG.

I suspect that you have authored from a lot of little clips. Nero has created a lot of titles. The Next Chapter button only works for chapters, not titles, unless the disc is programmed specifically. Most programs have it set to next chapter by default.

If you want to be able to skip by chapter, you need to edit all the clips together into a single clip, encode it as a single title, then author it with chapter stops in the right place. Some cheaper authoring tools, like TDA, will allow you to fake a single title from multiple titles at author time. Most don't.

As for Nero - I don't even think it is good for burning anymore. I threw it out somewhere during version 6, as 5.5 seemed to be the last point before the bloat set in.

I only use NERO for burning music CD discs and CD/DVD data discs and I cringe using it even for those uses.

    NERO blows donkey balls.

The "best" DVD Authoring program is TMPGEnc DVD Author ... it lacks some more "advanced" features but for most projects you never need anything more advanced. Plus it works well and is stable and very easy-to-use. Yes it isn't "cheap" but as far as DVD authoring software goes it really isn't expensive either.

If you want free you can try dvdauthor and dvdauthorgui. Only problem here is that you have to make your own menu backgrounds completely manually which is a real pain-in-the-ass.
