How to convert dvd movie to avi

hello i am a new to ripping dvds. all i want to do is convert some of my dvd movies to avi/divx/xvid. I have tried abt twenty programs but they dont come out with what i want. Basically i want a 800mb film with pretty high quality and i want a full screen. What i mean by full screen is that when i have used these softwares for conversion, the video size is pretty small, with big heavy black borders around the video so the video size is pretty small. what would be ideal is like the quality and the video size of a lost/prison break episode. I have tried around abt 20 software such as ImTOO DVD RIPPER, flash dvd ripper, none of them are very good. Please help, thank you

I've only used TMPGEnc Express, and even then not to make AVI files, so I can't comment on how well any of them work.
