I'm new here (that's why I'm in the Newbie forum, doncha know) and am hoping that those with a lot more computer knowledge than I possess can make a suggestion or two.
Some of the DVD's I'm attempting to decrypt (DVD Decrypter) and then Shrink (DVD Shrink) are encountering problems they seem unable to overcome. For instance, in using Decrypter, the process will only go so far before it stops and retries (I've let it go up to 100 before shutting it down). No go.
Running the same disc through Shrink gets pretty much the same result. 5% of the way in and I receive the error message, "Failed to read file C:\J&W\VTS_01-0." And that, as they say, is that.
This isn't the first time I've had this problem and certainly won't be the last. Sooo ... what can I do about it? Is this even something that can be fixed?
Many thanks in advance for your recommendations and input.

Neither DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink are being updated and some later discs have encryption that they can't crack. Instead of DVD Decrypter, use DVD Fab Decrypter instead

Another popular freeware program that uses DVD Decrypter, but should be able to rip about any DVD out there for backups with Shrink is RipIt4Me.

Okay, I've now given DVD Fab Decrypter a shot. Took about an hour to complete the job. I then tried using DVD Shrink and immediately received the same error message mentioned in my first post. Another line in that message I neglected to mention is "invalid access to memory location." Obviously, that's the source of the difficulty.
Therefore, to fix this the invalid access to memory location, I might need some other application...?

Run the ripped DVD structure through FixVTS and try again. RipIt4Me (already mentioned) automates this process. It creates a map for DVD Decrypter so it can work around the protection, uses FixVTS to repair the damage left behind, and loads the lot into Shrink for you.

Thanks for the suggestions, gentlemen.
Guns1inger: I've still got the FixVTS files on my HD. Would doing it again make a difference? I haven't yet tried RipIt4Me, so can I not just load the already-created-by-FixVTS files into RI4M? It'll save me a couple of hours. I'm not completely convinced that we're dealing with copyright protection in this case. The fact that I get the "invalid access to memory location" as soon as I use DVD Shrink makes me think it's something else. Then again, I'm far from saying I know much about computers beyond the basics, so I may well be way off base.
For the record, burning Season 3 Disc 1 of the two-disc set was a complete success.
Anyway, unless you or someone else tells me that starting with FixVTS again before using RI4M is mandatory, my inclination is to bypass the first step and go to the second.
handyguy: The DVD in question is "Jeeves & Wooster," Season 3 Disc 2. I believe it was released more than two years ago, so the more recent forms of protection wouldn't, I guess, be a factor.
Again, I am grateful for all of the input.

If you have already ripped it, as in this case, you can just use FixVTS. It may or may not work depending on how it was ripped.
RipIt4Me only work on the DVD itself, not on files already ripped.
The error message you are seeing in Shrink is usually associated with poorly ripped DVDs that have Sony ArCoSS protection, which RipIt4Me is designed to remove.Read my blog here.

I want to thank everyone for putting it all together for me. Adding RipIt4Me to the mix did the trick. Through your guidance, I started with RipIt4Me, which passed it along to VTSFix, followed by DVD Decrypter and finally DVD Shrink. Nice how each application opens the next.
The upshot is that the troublesome J&W disc has now been burned. I'm grateful for everbody's assistance, with a special nod to Guns1inger. Your suggestion was the last piece of the puzzle.
Thanks!

Whoops. Not so fast, buddy boy. Using the apps as recommended, I managed to burn two discs that had been problematic.
However, such is not the case with another one. It passes muster with RipIt4Me, passes it along to DVD Decrypter, then to VTSFix and finally to DVD Shrink. It's the last program that doesn't seem to like it.
We get about 10% into the encoding process when it comes to a grinding halt. Something about an exception, which is causing the program to close. There's also a mention about not finding or reading the handle, whatever that is. Point being, this is one stubborn disc!
Anybody had this problem, or simply know what to do about it? Hope so! I appreciate your assistance (once again).
