I'm a complete newb when it comes to making a video so I'm come here in search of info. I want to take video clips from a couple of movies, fuse them together some how, and play them as a video in one of my classes. My major problem is how would I get video clips? Can I download trailers of the movies I want from a site or do I have to rent the movie and then some how make clips that way? Any info regarding this would really help. Thanks.

    hi noob
well, offhand, if you can dl the clips off the net somewhere, this will save you from buying a capture card. you can then use a free tool listed here to edit and join the clips together
otherwise, you'll need a capture card and rent the dvd's

    what????

theres no need for a capture card and downloading the movies is illegal. There is a fair use clause however that should allow you to play short clips from the movies as long as you cite your sources and don't sell it. If I'm wrong about this I'll be quickly corrected.

You could use dvd-shrink (freeware) to rip the portion from the movies you are wanting.
Are you wanting to join these clips right back together to dvd? If so You can download a free 30 day trial of TMPGEnc DVD Author and just put the clips one after another..they will play one after another until they are done. If you want to get fancier let us know and we can help.

Yeah I just wanna use small clips from the videos and make a 3-5 video of them. I was thinking of dling the trailers from youtube or something and make the video that way. Is that legal?

I totally second greymalkin - there's no need for a capture card. And I'd be more comfortable with renting the DVDs.

DVDShrink wouldn't be my first suggestion for ripping - there are new encryption methods that it can't cope with and you may run into trouble. DVDFabDecrypter or RipIt4Me are much better candidates.

@ dallas!sfan: Also, a bit more detail would help:

    * What will you play them on? PC hooked up to a data projector or from disc in a DVD player?

    * How fancy do you want the "fused clips" to be?

The answers will help mould better suggestions for ways of doing it.

    P.S. Welcome to the forums.
