I've been successfully burning DVDs for a few days. Last night, my new Pioneer DVD-RW DVR111D 1.23 stopped writing properly. I checked for a firmware update and there was one. I downloaded it, ran it, and it keeps asking me if I want to retry (if it doesn't close out first) and tells me it's occuring an error that's preventing it from updating.

It's an external drive, if that helps.

I'm tempted to take it back and exchange it, but I fear the same problem might arise.

Thank you in advance for any help.

I have never tried to update firmware on an external drive. Most of the updaters expect the drive to be on the IDE cables. Some work best only for the first device on the second channel. You may have to temporarily install the drive in your PC, update it, then put it back in the case.

Like, actually remove it with screwdrivers and such, put it in the pc and do it then?

If I'm going to have to do that, is it very easy? I honestly have no real idea what I'd be doing, and I'm really afraid I might do some irreversable damage.

Is there possibly some other explanation as to why it's not working correctly anymore?

try posting your question at the PIONEER FORUM at Cdfreaks.com. if it's a external drive you won't be able to install it in your pc. i can see if you had it in a external dvd burner case that you bought but you bought the external version of the 111D.

    Thank you both.

I just posted at Cdfreaks, so hopefully I'll have an answer soon.

I'd try a lens cleaning disc first. Also, did you switch to a different media when the problems started?

Look under Pioneer 111D EXTERNAL. The latest firmware for external is 8.29.

I've still yet to receive a respone from anyone at CDfreaks. I've downloaded the external firmware and it keeps telling me available target not found.

    ARGH!

And yes, I've tried three different kinds of media.

My firmware finally updated. When I click on imgburn and look at my devices, it's now reading as a 111D 1.29

Which is great, but it's still not burning anything, and I've even got Verbatim DVD+R with disc ID MCC-004-00.

So I'm at a loss here. But before I go back to Best Buy, is there anything else I should do?
