  1. I've just recently bought my first Mac (Macbook Pro, to be specific... so we're talking about Intel architecture here) and I'm looking for some suggestions for basic audio/video utilies. To limit the scope for now, I'm only looking for audio conversion and muxing tools.

For example, one of my current test cases involves an .aac file and an .avi file with no audio stream. What's a good tool to convert the .aac to an .mp3? And, once it's converted, what's a good tool to mux it in with the .avi?

Command-line is generally preferred, since it's easier to script for batch processes. So Linux tools that work on OSX are great, but none of my Linux experience has involved multimedia in any way

ffmpegX and D-Vision : both are front end for a horde of Unix video encoding/conversion tools (ffmpeg, mencoder, mplayer, mp4box, avimerge, mpgtx, mpeg2enc, x264, avisplit, avifix, ogmdemux...), and they are really good apps.
If you browse through their package content, you'll also find these CLI tools.

For general audio conversion, you can use Max
