    hi,

i purhcased an external drive (pioneer 110 d) and hooked it up to my mac (powerbookG4.)
the instruction says that for mac os. 9 and above i don't need to do anything other than just plugging in.
    but it doesn't recognize it.
does anyone know how i should solve this problem?

    thanks in advance.

Assuming there's no hardware problem or connectivity issue (cable? enclosure?), you might try Patchburn.

    http://patchburn.de/download.html

How is the burner connected to the PowerBook? Are other devices connected to that port recognized?

thanks for the info. i installed patchburn 3.x but still doesn't recognize the drive.

i contacted both pioneer tech support and mac support and the former says they don't support when the internal dvr- is used as an external with an enclosure, and the latter charges 49 dollars to give me some solutions.

i don't think it's the problem with the port, since it works fine with others.

i'm afraid that i'm doing completely wrong as i'm not so tech-savvy.

    thanks for your help!

You may need to use OS X. I'm not totally sure.

    Hmmm...

How about a sanity check: Are you sure you've got the drive jumpered (as Master/Single) and connected properly?

What does System Profiler show being connected to the FW port (when the enclosure is connected there)?

If you did one, check the jumpers first, then try the other method for initial recognition

i think the propblem was the connection bet. the drive and the enclosure.
i opened it and reconnected, and now it works fine!

it seems that all the problems that i had in terms of extracting a clip from a dvd of the region other than the one set as the defult in my internal drive are finally solved!

    thanks for all your help.
