  1. I am a bit confused with all the different codec and codec pack options.

So. I am asking, what is everyone's favorite pack which is up to date and pretty inclusive? I know there is no *BEST* its just an opinion but I am looking for your opinions here. Thanks in advance!

I probably should mention I am running Windows XP PRO SP2.

Steer clear of "all in one packs" ... they are not newbie safe ... only install those you actually need will prevent many well known issue's .

Not only is there no 'best; codec packs, there are not even any 'good' codec packs. They routinely install old codecs, corrupted codecs and codecs that replace your good codecs with bad ones or cause system problems bad enough to require a system reformat at times. If in doubt, just do a forum search for 'codec pack' on our site.

The best way is to use a program like Gspot 2.60 and see which codec your file needs. Then install only that codec. In general, you need a MPEG-2 codec as Windows doesn't have that. Then the ffdshow program will give you most of the AVI type codecs commonly used. Exceptions are RM and Quicktime. These can be handled by Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative player installs. The player will only be installed once and the Media Player Classic Player is good for a lot of formats

If you don't want or need to install a lot of codecs you may never use, try VLC Media Player. It plays most any format with it's own codecs, no need to install them. And it's freeware.

Something else that should make you nervous about codec packs : the makers of WinAVI and a number of other nasty one-click-wonders recommend codec packs to solve codec problems. This they consider as "support".

(On the other hand, the makers of WinAVI also now refer people with problems to this site instead of offering real support themselves)
