I'm ripping some dvd's and my standalone dvd divx player supports ac3 i'm pretty sure, but it also supports mp3 and .mpg.

Is there any way to convert the audio for the movie to mp3 3/2.1? Would it be worth it to save the space by squishing it down to 192?

I made an attempt to use gknot and try to do it but i got a little lost in the settings, i ended up with a file that was joint stereo. Do i have to use something other then gknot(besweet) to encode the audio? I saw another tool listed, Aud-X, will that work and make an mp3 that would play fine in my standalone player?

I would be surprised if you standalone gave you anything other than 2.0 playback from mp3. 5.1 @ 192 would sound crap, given that 2.0 @ 192 is less than perfect.

If you want to simplify things, use AutoGK instead of the full blown GKnot

U can use Aud-X HGHQ (192 kbps), which is dolby prologicII compatible, which means
that it will be more than stereo (assuming your HT amp can decode DPLII, which is very much likely)

Why do you say that? Dolby Pro Logic 2 was a pretty recent addition to digital amps. Many don't have it. Would it be downconverted to dolby pro logic 1 on older digital stereos?

I have an older digital amp without dlp2 on it. In fact I remember about three months after I bought mine a newer model had all of my features PLUS dolby pl2 for the same price!

Anyway I imagine it would be down to pro logic one if you don't have pro logic 2 which would mean mono rear channels unlike the stereo rear channels that pro logic 2 synthesizes.

    just my two cents though....

hmmmm maybe it's just best to shove the ac3 file in there and save the trouble, the video is in 2cd size so for a 2hr movie that still give 1200kbs which is fine for me.
