hi there,
i have never posted a question before. I am very new to this. I am trying to burn a disc and I am getting an error that the media is bad. I tried fuji and tdk. i have a tdk burner 0404n. this happened a few months ago and I updated the firmware to 1.0c. It has been working fine ever since. I just recently bought some new discs and am now getting an error message that the media is bad. I had one blank disc left from the last batch that I bought months ago and it burned just fine. I have looked to see if there were any firmware updates but haven't found anything. Please help!!!

danibigg,
If you "had one blank disc left from the last batch that I bought months ago and it burned just fine.", it sounds like your problems is related to the media. You may just need to start using better media. Alternately, you could follow GKar's suggestion to get a new burner, which would let you use more types of media successfully. It's your system, and your choice.

do you have any suggestions about what kind of media to buy. my original discs were tdk and that is what the new discs are??

Your last available firmware was written in 2004 which means you have a very limited ability to burn modern media effectively, you may get lucky, but at $35 or so for 100 DVD's that may be coasters or pay $35 or so for a burner that will burn everything before made before 2004, it's your call, buy the newer burner. Look for an NEC, LG or Pioneer burners and try to buy only Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim media. As you are in the USA I would recommend an LG GSA-10N burner (@$35 through Newegg.com) with Taiyo Yuden (@ $35 per 100 8x) through Supermediastore.com media, problems solved.

danibigg,
I've been using Taiyo Yudens for a long time, with no problems and no coasters. That would be my personal recommendation. Considering your drive, you would probably be better off with 4x TY media. The only place I saw that currently has those disks is here at meritline, and they are valueline, which I haven't really tried. The smallest package they have is $25 for 100, which is very good if they work. If they didn't work, it's not such a good deal, because for a few dollars more you could get a new burner that won't be so particular about media. It's a close call, and depends mostly on how you want to proceed. -
I'm just a few discs short of having burned 300 of those 4x Value-Line Taiyo Yuden discs from Meritline, on 3 different burners, with just one coaster.
