I am trying to cut and .avi file into smaller chunks. I am using the instructions on Doom9 and this site. I am doing everything exactly as the instructions say, but the files are to big.

Basically I am starting with a 750MB file that has an 1:45 play time and I am trying to cut out about a 15-20 minute segment. When I am following the instructions I end up getting a 350MB file for about 20 minutes worth of video.

This small segment is almost half the size of the original file so this means that if I cut 2 20 minute segments from this video, totaling about 40 minutes of the original 1:45 playing time, I get 2 files that are larger than my original source file.

I thought that if I "cut" 20 minutes from a 1:45 long file then I should get a file that is that is proportionate to my original file. Am I doing something wrong?

    Thanks for the help.

  2. Hi-

You're probably converting your audio to PCM WAV audio, and bloating the file size. You can open up one of the cut pieces in GSpot to confirm (or disprove). You want to Direct Stream both the audio and video. Maybe try VDubMod.

That was my problem, but if I use direct processing of the audio I get bad sync issues.

  4. What kind of audio is it originally? VBR MP3 maybe? Then don't ever use VDub for anything when the audio is VBR MP3. Use VDubMod (or Nandub) and answer "No" to the question. Then go ahead and cut, making sure both audio and video are set to Direct Stream Copy.

That was my problem, but if I use direct processing of the audio I get bad sync issues.

You knew that already, but were still wondering why the size got larger?

Yes, the audio is VBR and VD gave me a warning about VBR audio and told me to use full processing on the audio. If I used Direct Steam setting I got audio sync problems. There was nothing in any of the tutorials that specifically addressed VBR audio. I never made the connection that it was my audio causing the file bloat.

Do I just follow the same steps in using Nandub or VDubMod?

  6. I don't have VDub installed, but I think VDubMod is the same. NanDub is different and easier, as it doesn't have the Streams Button, but an Audio button. And the Audio is set for Direct Stream Copy by default (as it is in VDubMod).
