  1. I've got a japanese avi file and the subtitle file but every method for joining them seems to involve re-encoding the avi file which leads to loss quality or a larger file. Can anyone advise me here?

  2. Yes. The advice would be to include some useful information in your post so that an answer can be arrived at.

There are several dozen types of AVI file. What might yours be?

AVI may have several types of audio file. Do you perhaps know what yours is?

There are 30 or more different subtitle formats. Which one do you have?

Methods to achieve the desired goal depend on desired playback device, output device, and media type intended to be used. Would you care to enlighten us on these points?

Most Divx-compatible players can just play an SRT file with the same name.

Yes, you can have a subtitle stream in an AVI (or in MKV container) and you don't have to reencode anything, just re-multiplex. However, the player support for "internal" subtitles is limited, at least for AVI.

  4. The files I have are Divx files and I have ssa and srt versions of the subs. I want to burn them to a DVD to play on my stand alone DVD player. I want to burn them as data files as the player can read these. It is a Phillips DVP 642. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Perdomot - No offense intended, but if you joined 4 years ago, you really should know that the less info you give, the less help you will get. Do you never read the forums here?

Your last post was extremely helpful. Just burn the AVI and SSA and SRT files to DVD as a data disc. I have the DVP-642 myself. It should play the subtitles fine if you do this. Select the subtitles first and then the movie when playing or it won't play the subtitles at all.

In short: Leave the subtitle srt file as a separate file and burn both AVI and .srt to the same disc. Done.

  7. Just make sure the two files have the same name, with the appropriate extension.

Your two seperate posts could be used as textbook examples of both "good" and "bad" methods to post. In fact, they may very well become part of an upcoming Guide.

May or may not be true. On my player, I can select any subtitle file to add to any AVI file, as long as they are on the same disk.
