I have two seperate .avi files and two corresponding .srt files with subtitles for each file. I want to burn these to DVD as a single video. I'm sure this is rather tricky and requires a few programs. I want to comine the avi files seamlessly and want to combine the subtitles to go with them (without them going out of sync where the two files meet). Any suggestions?

Here is how I would do it, which to date has worked without audio or subtitle sync problems. Not everyone has had the same luck.

Open part a in virtualdubmod. Click on File->Information and note the exact running time of part a.

Append part b. (If you have vbr mp3 audio then you are screwed at this point. Let's assume you don't, and we will tackle the exception later).

Click on streams -> stream List. Highlight the audio stream.

If it is AC3, click on Demux.

If it mp3, right-click and choose Full processin Mode.

    Right-click again and choose Compression.

    Click on Uncompressed PCM.

    Click OK

Click Save Wav and create a new file.

Once this is complete, Highlight the audio stream and click Disable.

Click Add and select the wav or AC3 file you have just saved.

    Click OK.

Click on File->Save As and create a new avi using Direct Stream Copy mode.

Test to make sure you still have audio sync.

Exception : if you have VBR mp3 you will not be able to append the parts. Load each part individually, save the mp3 audio out as uncompressed wav, then use this to replace the vbr mp3 audio. From there you should be able to start at the top of this list and process correctly

I have also joined srt subs using subtitle workshop's join function, then highlighting the part b subs and adding a delay. Unfortunately I am not at my main PC and don't have subtitle workshop in front of me to give you details. I will add them in a couple of hours when I get home.
