  1. I have a Sony DRU-810A DVD burner, and I have been trying to burn some Memorex 2.4X DVD+R DL discs. So far I have tried 2 of them, both failed at the exact point where it started to burn the second layer. I suspect the problem is not with the writer, but the discs. I even had a strange thought that the DVD+R DL was not DL, such that burning of second layer was not possible. I used DVD Identifer on the media and came up with this. I know some of you is going to tell me these are not such good discs, but a consistent 100% failure rate?

You didn't mention what program you used for burning? Layer break problems are more often from the burning software. You could try ImgBurn, it seems to do well. I've used DVD Decrypter and it burned a couple of Verbatim DLs with no problem using a Sony burner. I just got a ten pack of Verbatims DLs, so I'm going to try using ImgBurn with my BenQ 1640.

Some people have good luck with Ritek DL, and some don't. If using a different burning program doesn't help, you might try a Verbatim DL and if it works, then that may be your answer. The only other possibility is trying a firmware upgrade for the burner, but I wouldn't depend on that fixing the problem.

  4. I think the problem may be something else. I have a VIDEO_TS folder that's 7.5 GB in size, so I used TMPGEnc to create an ISO file, then tried to burn with ImgBurn. An error came up indicating the file was not properly set for DVD-DL. I have another video file in ISO format that's 7.8 GB in size, same problem. The DVD file structure is different for a DL DVD?

  5. What version of TMPGEnc are you using? Earlier version do not support DL.

  6. I was able to successfully burn the video by following a guide using ImgBurn for DL DVD. I have one more question about this. If I use a DVD9 as a data storage, is there any similar pitfall I should be watching out for?

I'm not completely sure, but I don't think the 'layer break' problem would apply to a data disc, at least not in the same way as a DVD video. But ImgBurn can do data discs and it seems to handle DL and layer breaks fairly well.

Any DL data disc/ImgBurn users out there?

Nope. I had a similar question/concern that I asked on the ImgBurn forum.

ImgBurn takes care of determining the layer break on data DVDs automatically - just add all your files to the "Build" mode window and burn. Easy
