I had too many problems on my pc so i did a format. Now games are smooth but can't play my dvd's.
I can't find a free dvd decoder so i downloaded VLC again , it worked great before the format but now just won't play anything.
I tried uninstalling, reinstalling and even re-downloaded. If i try to play a dvd the only option i'll have is to hit reset on my pc.
Do i need to download some kind of codecs ?
I had the same probleme before with win media player and VLC solved that problem, now VLC is the problem
Why is it so complicated to play a dvd on a pc ?!?

Update for those reading, still can't play any dvd's (movies).
I found a cd with powerdvd 6.0 so i installed it but it does the same thing, freezes. I have to shut it down through task manager.
Maybe its my dvd drive ??
Do i need to insall a driver for my dvd drive ?
If i look in properties, under driver, it says driver provider: microsoft. -
Well, no reflection on VLC, but Windows does not include a MPEG-2 decoder because of legal problems. You can install a freeware MPEG-2 decoder like Stinkys MPEG2 Codec. Or most DVD players like PowerDVD or similar can also install them, even if you uninstall the program later.
However, VLC has it's own MPEG-2 codecs, separate from the Windows codecs. If you can't play a MPEG-2 video with VLC, you have other problems. You reformatted, but did you do a clean install with nothing from your old setup? If so, you shouldn't have these sort of problems.
Try this: Drop one of your problematic videos into Gspot 2.60 and see what it says. It should show what it is doing or not doing for the MPEG-2 conversions to video. Get back to use with the results. -
You are missing the point. Some background:
MPeg2 (the basis of DVD) requires somebody to pay the license for the decoder to play the DVD. Microsoft chose to not burden the price of XP with this license fee.
Standard industry practice is to burden the base computer (if DVD-ROM is included) or the DVD-ROM drive itself (if sold as an add on). This means they pay the royalty and include a MPeg2 decoder of some kind with the new computer or accessory DVD drive. Most good vendors supply a limited version of PowerDVD or WinDVD or similar with the computer or accessory DVD drive.
You will find this on the CD that came with the product. Install the MPeg2 decoder and the player and you can play a DVD. This also applies to standalone DVD players. The MPeg2 decoder is built into the price of the unit.
Lost the CD? Well then you are screwed.
Now you need to contract with MPeg LA LCC for a license yourself or buy a product that includes a license (like PowerDVD or WinDVD). (Google MPeg LA LCC)
Another path is to seek a reverse engineered clone decoder. These exist for MPeg2 and VLC includes one. Others require research.
So what was it you wanted to know? -
My dvd drive came with a powerdvd 6.0 cd , i installed it and same thing, pc gets sluggish as hell, program stop responding, have to be shut down with task manager.
I tried VLC, it doesn't work either.
I also tried the trial version of windvd, same thing, prog stops responding.
I've been trying a lot of different dvd's so i know its not the discs.
I'm going outside for a smoke before i lose it. -
