Hi,
I know I'm being a bit premature, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend a HD Dvd
Player at a halfway reasonable price. Right now where I live I cannot get HD programming
over the air.
And Suddenlink just took over Charter Communications and they don't even have there website
up and running yet. So that leaves me with satellite which I don't think is worth it.
I do have a xbox 360 and they are suppose to come out with a $100 HD dvd add on player,
but it makes me wonder how good a $100 dollar player would actually be.
Thanks again for all the great help guys I really appreciate it.....

Real HD players cost $1000, try the Oppo. The highest rated HD upconverting DVD player out there for around $200. Rated higher than many costing 2x, 3x even 4x more. I have one and love it with my 50" Sony HDTV. http://www.oppodigital.com/

You don't have much of a choice on selection, it comes down to how much you want to spend. For HD you can get the base model Toshiba for $500 or upgrade to their professional grade unit for $1000. For Blu-ray, you can get the Samsung for $1000.
Personally, I would wait a generation or two for prices to go down and for all of the bugs to get worked out. Plus there is still the issue of some movies on one format or the other and not both. So unless you plan on getting one of each...it's best to wait it out.
EDIT: And I agree with ricoman, I also have the Oppo (971). It is an excellent player.Google is your Friend -
Well handyguy, of course you don't really mean HDTV VCR, maybe DVR is closer to reality.
I agree with Krispy, 971 is not bad for it's performance. Personal I have one too. -
he does mean HDTV VCR

I'd get the XBOX 360 add on for 170. (It will come with a remote and a HD-DVD copy of King Kong)
It would be a 'cheap" investment and low risk. Seems like it's working well in demos, but take that for what it is.

What good is the JVC HD VCR when the OP says no HD available OTA?
It won't turn SD into HD.
Did I read wrong? -

You won't get a HD (HD-DVD or BluRay) for a "decent" price. Prices will continue to go down as more makers produce players. Just curious, what kind of tape would an HD VCR use? It would have to have a huge capacity, I would think. Also, I notice it had an HDMI input but only component output. I would think that there would be some loss there.
