Is it possible that a firmware update can give the 5960 the ability to show long filenames? I like everything about the unit but those short file names alway make me cringe.

It is most likely possible, but none of the Philips units that I am aware of support long file names.

5960 is garbleing filenames that the 642 displays properly.
642.................. ::::::5960
the.4440.S0 1 TH2F4D~1
the.4440.S0 2 TH49C2~2
the.4440.S0 3 TH5103~3
the wierd 5960 filenames are also out of order.
eg: TH2F4D~1 is NOT the.4440.S0 1
this particular disk is a TDK dvd burned as ISO/UDF with Padus Diskjuggler -
I have nowtried about a dozen dvds of various divx tv series..all have same problem..
only a couple very old ones (made with Roxio , i believe) show a non garbeled filename.
But even in that case, the sort order is baesd upon the trtncated displayed name not full name. in other words, files are played OUT OF ORDER.
NEXT usually goes back to 1st one.
