  1. The latest version of Jesterware's program DVD to iPod supports 640x480 H.264 encoding for iPod!!!

There seems to be a problem with aspect ratio when the source material isn't full screen but hopefully there will be an update soon to fix this (or perhaps I haven't found the right setting just yet).

Either way, the results are stunning!!!

If you watch iPod video on your television, as I do, I hope whatever software you use to create iPod video updates to 640x480 soon... I have a feeling you too will be very happy!!!

    jonas more,
Thanks for the tip, You haven't given up on QT Pro have you?? I am really disappointed in how long it has taken the Windows camp to come up with anything. By the way the new resolutions for Regular MPEG 4 (XVID, DivX, 3ivX etc) are also 640x480 and are supported as is even though H.264 isn't (other than jesterware). DivX given adequate bitrate also looks very good on TV. Thanks again for the info.

    You're welcome!

Since DVD to iPod was updated yesterday, I guess you could say QT Pro is a thing of the past for me... I hate to feel that way; it really could be a fantastic program! The video files I have converted with it have been fantastic but since it won't input AC3 audio and is just way to slow, I'll not be using it for the purposes of iPod video.

Me too! I was expecting updates to existing programs much sooner.

I hope Nero Recode updates soon... with it, I have never had a problem with aspect ratio or a/v sync. If they keep improving on video quality (I have noticed less artifacting with the more recent updates) I will probably use it more often (in my opinion Jesterware programs, even before yesterdays update, produce a higher quality video)

Well Apple trying to lock people to their encoder wouldn't have helped (iTunes refuses to upload files that aren't flagged as encoded by Apple even though iPod's can decode them). Just took people a bit of trial and error, but x264 profiles for 640x480 iPod encoding have been out for quite some time now and Nic did a modified mp4box build that flags files correctly a few weeks back.

    celtic_druid,
I am using x264 with MeGUI for all my non-DVD sources, are these new profiles available for MeGUI?? and what version of MP4Box should I be using?? It was not my intention to offend any developers, and I realize Apple/iTunes is being a pain in the ass, and since I am not a developer I realize I probably shouldn't complain anyway But it is beyond the desire and ability of most end users to use a solution that needs to circumvent iTunes (as bloated and seemingly monopolizing as it may appear). I for one would be eager to learn how to implement the new profiles and spread the good word!

If you are bypassing iTunes then the version of mp4box shouldn't matter. As I said it is a case of iTunes not uploading files, not a case of iPod's not playing them.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Sharktooth updated his profiles.

    From the last GPAC update:
    - some workarounds for iPod file producing (special UUID needed) (-ipod option, auto on for .m4a and .m4v extensions)

  7. I received a reply to the email I sent Jesterware yesterday concerning the aspect ratio problem I was having...

They had spotted the problem before I contacted them and they are working on it now. They also indicated that an updated version should be ready for release on their website within the next day or so.
