I have an AVI file that is wide screen (640x336). When I play the file
back with Windows Media Player, it looks fine, but when I attempt to
create a DVD with Ulead DVD Workshop 2, it comes out full screen, slightly scrunched.

Is it possible to make a wide screen DVD with this file, with the usual
black bars on the top and bottom?

Should I switch ot another authoring program?

  2. I use ReStream to set the aspect ratio after conversion to MPG. SFAIK, this has to be set in the MPG stream before authoring.

The aspect ratio flag exists in two places in a DVD. It should be in the header of the mpeg, set while encoding, and also in the DVD itself, set when authoring.

DVD Workshop 2 does not support authoring of 16:9 DVDs, however if your mpeg was correctly encoded then you should be able to author in DVD Workshop 2, then alter the aspect ratio flags in the DVD itself before burning.

To do this you can use IFOEdit, ifoAR2WS and others. ReStream is useful if you negelected to encode with the 16:9 flag set in your encoder.

Depending on the player, just having the correct aspect ratio set in one or the other of these may be enough, but for completeness you should have it set in both.
