Finnlay, blu ray has arrived to Portugal! Yupi.

But just one question: Can I record a blu ray disc in a simple DVD recorder (the pc one) or do I need a new recorder?
BTW, i saw that the blu ray disc has 25 GB, is there any other capacity?

    Thanks in advance.

No you need a blu ray capable burner to burn blu ray discs. They are very expensive now also.

Blu ray discs hold 25 GB per layer. They are just now talking about releasing movies with two layers so that'd be 50 GB total. The technology also has the capability to add even more layers up to 4, meaning a total of 200 GB. But that is still very far off. I think all of the commercial blu ray discs available right now are single layer.

Yep, a blu ray writer is needed to burn blu ray discs. However, blu ray is backwards compatible which means it wil also burn current blank dvds and cds. The same goes for hd dvd.

As someone here pointed out quite recently, you can buy a 250GB external drive for less than the price of eight blank discs and that is exactly what I did.

Agreed. Yeah, being a videophile I'm very excited about a 200GB disc, especially if it's a re-writable, but we are so far away from that right now, and the market will play us into continually upgrading our equipment till then.

In the meantime, I just bought my seventh external HDD, this one for 300GB. They are the way to go right now if you want mass re-writable storage at the cheapest rate per GB.

As well, they are reliable, fast, and you can change things around real easily, organize your files better and migrate data back and forth super fast with USB 2.0. If a re-writable blu-ray disc is anything like a CD+/-RW or DVD+/-RW (both I find rather sluggish) then an external HDD is a much better method of storage anyway.

Well, at least certainly for now. We'll have to wait and see.
I hate VHS. I always did.
