I'm trying to play some DVD backups I made between 2 and 4 years ago and I'm having various problems; my XBOX 360 can't read them, my HTPC (PC DVD-ROM drive) and set top DVD player plays okay until it gets to the last couple of chapters then the playback is very very jerky and freezes then resumes a lot. The weird thing is there's no scratches on them and my new PC DVD burner plays 'em with no problem...

Any idea why the playback isn't smooth with all players??? Is it the discs or the burning method?

    TIA

P.S. - The discs are 1x and 4x white DVD-R (no brand is on them, just numbers in the inner ring) and the movies were backed up with DVDShrink then burn with Nero 5.x as UDF (or UDF/ISO I don't remember exactly)

Use DVD IDENTIFIER or DVDINFO PRO to find out the MEDIA ID of those discs. Sounds like a media problem.

ALWAYS burn with brand name media if you care for the content.

    ALWAYS!

You really do get what you pay for. If it costs a little more, big deal. It's always worth it. Then again, they're getting cheaper all the time nowadays. I personally have never had any trouble with any of my Sony DVD-R discs for, I think, almost 4-5 years now. It's those cheapies that have given me headaches.

Do yourself a favor. Pay the $20 or so and get a batch of good quality brand name DVD-Rs and re-burn the stuff from your new PC DVD burner.

Try one at least for now and I'm sure it will work fine. If you like, burn them again to make backups of them to make sure.

    Good luck.

(I can't wait for blu-ray writable to become widely available. Now for sure I can back up tons of stuff for the future.)
I hate VHS. I always did.

PRINCO is crap dvd media which is why you're not able to play them back correctly. Use good quality dvd media from now on then you won't have any problems in the future. Use VERBATIM &, TAIYO YUDEN dvd media which can be bought from www.rima.com. VERBATIM is sold at BEST BUY & OFFICE DEPOT.

thanks... so my burning/authoring isn't the issue?

what about Memorex 16x DVD-Rs (media code: RITEKF1)? are they okay? cuz I just copied that Princo DVD movie disc to the Memorex 16x DVD-R and it plays better in PC DVD-ROM drive and plays somewhat better in set top DVD player but with random blocks of garbage

No your authoring and burning isn't the issue, it's the junk dvd media that you're using.

Take a look at the DVD MEDIA section to your left.<<<<<<<<
Look at the reviews for RITEK media which also isn't the best media to use. As I mentioned use VERBATIM dvd media.
