    Hello,
I just got an iMac G5 2.1mhz (iSight) with 512MB memory and Pioneer DVR-K05.
    The 1st DVD I ripped (7.89GB) using MTR (version 3.0 r13e) took 36 minutes 4 seconds, a LOT longer than my G4.

My older setup, a G4 Powermac dual 1.25mhz with 1.75GB memory and Pioneer 110D, took 21 minutes 46 seconds to rip the same disc.

    My question is:
Does it take longer to rip a DVD on the G5 because I only have 512MB ram? If so how much ram do I need to get for the fastest ripping and compressing? I bought the G5 for things to work faster, not slower.
    Thanks!

  2. You may benifit from more Ram, but I really think you need to look at the ripping speed of the two DVD drives. The unit in your G4 may not have a rip lock, either by intention or because you installed a firmware that removed it. The newer G5 drive possibly has a firmware riplock.

Rip lock -- well it's always something!!

The G4 Powermac has a Pioneer DVR-110D with firmware revision 1.17 and it rips a lot faster than the other drive in the Powermac, a DVR-105 (rev 1.30).

    The G5 iMac has a Pioneer DVR-K05 (rev Q523).

I don't know if they have that rip lock or not. I just want the fastest ripping/compressing.

  4. The K05 is an 8x drive, the 110 is a 16x. Yiu can swap the devices, so the G5 has the faster drive.

Dang. Yeah I now see on Videohelp the read speed of the DVR-110D is 16X while the DVR-K05 is 8X. That sucks.
Thanks willrob for the help with that

    Now what about compression?
That same 7.8GB disc took 14 min. compress to single-layer size using DVD2ONEX 2.05 on the G4.
It took 20 min. on the G5. Would more ram help with this?

Maybe I should just keep the Powermac instead of replacing it with the iMac since it works so well. I wonder how fast the iMac encodes. Hmmmmm.
    Anybody wanna buy a 20" G5 iMac w/built-in iSight?

  6. More Ram will help with compression.
