    Hi everyone,

Apple lost my powerbook and were kind enough to send me a new mac book pro as a replacement. I seem to have most things working but my digital camera video won't play using quicktime. It has sound though. The video worked fine on my G4 and plays using VLC as well as some other player I tried. For the life of me I can't find the codec I'm missing and with quicktime being integral to the front row application I need some help.

    thanks,

VLC has a properties/information dialog that you can use to find more information about the video in question. Post the results here, so we can help you find the Quicktime components you'll need. (Don't include information like the file/path name, or username, if you prefer.)

Offhand, though, I'm guessing it's probably a DivX/XVid-encoded video, from the sound of it. But I could always be wrong and it could be an AVI with WMV-encoded video.

quicktime should probably play this without any codec. I'm really confused.

I'd bet that what you've got is MPEG4-ASP (advanced simple profile)!

QT (native) only supports MPEG4-SP (simple profile) using v6+, or MPEG4-AVC (aka h.264) using v7+.

You can add ASP support by installing either DivX, Xvid or 3ivX codec (as all those encoders have options that when turned on with change the encoding profile automatically from SP to ASP).
