Is it possible to capture directly to KVCD? Or is it one of those formats that you have to record to an uncompressed source first and then encode to KVCD?
Thanks!

KVCD is not a format. It's just an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 file that has settings set out-of-spec to VCD and DVD standards. So the question really makes no sense.

You can capture to MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, but those devices usually set to some compliant or typical. Not some compressed-to-hell non-compliant mess.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

With my ATI MMC program the answer is no. The GOP (group of picture) structure of KVCD CQ 352x240 NTSCFilm PLUS 120min.mcf is 1:5823:2. That's 1- I frame: 5,823 - P frames: and 2 - B frames: per GOP. My MMC settings can go only to 1:99:2. Thats 1 - I frame, 99 - P frames, and 2 - B frames per GOP max. My normal VCD capture is 1:4:2. Big difference. With a GOP like that trying to cut out commercials would be a nightmare. The spread between I frames is too great.

 Good luck.

The "5823" is some dorky thing, I forget what it was supposed to mean. The P frames never get anywhere near that retarded number, depending on the GOP restrictions. Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

If you have a MAC, ffmpegX supports KVCD natively.

If you want a commercial encoder which can encode directly to KVCD/KDVD, then by all means look into YMPEG.

FFMPEG also supports KVCD, so any capture program that uses it for transcoding, can be set up to use KVCD parameters.
I could go on, but you get the point

 Cheers!
