I am aware that DivX uses the MPEG4 format, but what is the difference between an MPEG4 file and a DivX file?

    Big C,
The main difference is the container file that the Audio/Video is saved in. DivX Video can be saved in either an MP4 Container with MP4 Compliant Audio (AAC,M4a usually), or in an AVI Container with WAV,Mp3,AC3,WMA Audio. Either way DivX is an MPEG-4 Codec it's just that the container is different, DivX also has it's own native .divx container format now as well which is quite similar to DivX in an AVI Container.
