I would like to record something I'm playing off the internet in Real Player with the MS Sound Recorder. I'm not quite sure where Recorder is getting its input. I happen to have RadioShark(RS), which is a hardware device that can be scheduled to record from AM or FM. It's pretty clear that Recorder is picking up the station RS is tuned to. I've tried muting RS and killing it (the task). It persists. Finally I disconnected it, and now I get a little wiggly line in the Recorder window. How, if possible, do I use XP Pro facilites to record the Real Player sound? I've tried a few combos of the volume fron the control panel.

    hi,
M$ sound recorder is not a good choice... unless yo do some tricks with it... you'll only be able to record appx 45 SEC's!!!!!! so using a different recorder/editor program.... highly recommended... total record is good ... audacity (it's free but it doesn't total recorder..smile).... there others both freeware and shareware.....

Thanks. Total Recorder looks attractive. I downloaded audacity a few weeks ago, but the need then disappeared, so I haven't played with it. I'll check it out to see if it does what I hope.

I've heard you can use a simple splitter on your audio line out (or the headphone jack on your speakers if present) and run it back in to the line in... never tried it myself, so extreme caution is advised.

I'm very happy with Audacity- if you can find the old 1.0, its very simple to understand & use, & will record to the limits of the available space on the HD- hours & hours. The newer versions have lotsa great tools, but they make the interface a puzzle for first time users. Audacity has plugins for mp3 & Ogg Vorbis.
