I just converted one of my movies to AVI with AutoGK and the picture is smaller than original. I opened original VOB file with DIVX Player to see what resolution have and it was 720x480. When I converetd to AVI i have now file with resolution 720x304. I set it up in AutoGK to Fixed Width for 720 and Audio to original. I'm wondering if there is anything that could be done to encode this movie to its original resolution?

You need to take into account a couple of factors when converting from DVD to avi.

    1. DVD is designed for television, which does not have square pixels. AVI is designed for computer playback, where the pixels are square. When converting from DVD to avi, some resolution change is expected because of the change to pixel aspect ratio.

    2. If this was a widescreen movie, AutoGK will also trim of the black bars, if they exist, and again adjust pixel aspect ratio to account for anamorphic, or 16:9 encoding, on the original disc.

Without knowing what the original movie was (aspect ratio of encoding, aspect ratio of the film etc) it is hard to say if autogk is right or wrong.

That said, 720 x 304 is about right for a 2.35:1 widescreen movie originally encoded as anamorphic.

    A-ha,
so that means I didn't do anything wrong while encoding? Is that how is going to be?

Atually right now the AVI file looks more widescreen than original DVD, hmm, intresting.

I measured actuall view area and for:

    AVI its - 21x8 inch
    DVD its - 21.5x9.5 inch

    BTW

I play my DVD and my PC on the same TV Set.

I think I found it...I checked VOB files and they plays the same as AVI files which I think means that I have to RIP it again with different settings...

  8. I just converted one of my movies to AVI with AutoGK and the picture is smaller than original.

The DVD when resized becomes roughly 854x480 (if 16:9), including any black bars encoded into the video. Yours is 720x304 and is, of course, smaller. Should you want to make yours about the same size, then 1) you'll have to choose a width of either 848 or 864 as AutoGK uses only Mod16 resizing, and 2) you'll need a much larger file size, about 36% greater, for the same quality (assuming 848x352 final res).

...I think means that I have to RIP it again with different settings...

I don't follow. It should look pretty good at 720x304.

Edit: I just saw your previous post. If the DVD is really widescreen 4:3, then there's not much point in making the width any greater than 640, in my opinion.

720x304 does looks good, Its just smaller and the black bars are bigger than original.

I saw that VOB file had the same vieving size as final AVI file, so I thought perhaps I should change something during ripping process.
