  1. Okay... I just got this laptop, and it has an 8x DVD+-RW drive. I've already used DVD Shrink and Nero to copy several DVD's - season 3 of Smallville - and they all burned within 10-15 minutes, and play fine on my DVD player, and my PS2.

Earlier today, I tried to use the same methods - same programs and everything - to copy another, single DVD, and this time it took nearly an hour to burn, and won't play on any DVD player I test it on.

I tried it with another DVD and the same thing happened.

What's the problem? Is there something wrong with my burner? Is there some type of copy protection on the discs that i'm not aware of?

The first thing I would look into would be to see if the drive is in PIO mode.

It could be PIO mode. You can check it in 'Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers'. Look at 'Properties>Advanced Settings' and it should show DMA modes for all drives. If you see PIO, right click on that channel and 'Uninstall', then reboot and check.

But it should still burn OK, it would just take a long time to read and burn.

I would try DVD Fab Decrypter or RipIt4Me in case it's a decryption problem. If it still has the same problem, get back to us.

Have you made any other changes in the computer? Added any programs recently? Using a different brand of media? If burning is the main problem, media is the first suspect.

When you say it took an hour to burn. Do you mean only burning or the whole process of transcoding and burning?
