I'm editing a few movie clips (VOB files) and I want to make one of them slow motion. How can I do this? I have Windows movie maker and a few other editing programmes but I have access to plenty of others too.

You can do that by lowering the framerate. But normal slow motion is made with a high speed camera and played back at normal speed to get smooth slow motion. By lowering the framerate on a regular video, it will end up sort of 'jumpy' as the video plays. You can probably insert duplicate frames and restore the original framerate, and maybe use some smoothing filters to help, but it will never be smooth slow motion.

If you are starting with VOB files, I have converted them into mpegs, using VOB2MPG or similar, and then edit them with Womble MPEG Video Wizard. I do a split at the start and end of where I want slow motion. Then, I right click on the part I want to slow-motion, and it gives options to play back at the desired speed. I've used this on home movies (recorded in MPEG-2) especially for speeding up scenes. I imagine it could easily work on VOBs too.

The good thing about MPEG Video Wizard is that the export does not re-encoded the unchanged parts, while it does re-encode the portion that is changed, in this case the slow-motion effect. You can also add on a sound track too, if desired. It's fairly simple to use.

    Good luck.

Cheers for the tips. I'll try some out. THe stuff involving the scripting looks a bit advanced for me at the minute but thanks anyway.
