    PS3 price drops to $410
    22 September 2006 5:06 by Siggy

Sony has announced that it will lower the price of PlayStation 3 to diminish the price gap between PS3 and Xbox 360. The price cut is aimed for the basic version of the console with 20GB hard drive. Sony Computer Entertainment President Ken Kutaragi said at the Tokyo Game Show that the customers had been complaining about too expensive console, and they saw it necessary to cut the price.

After the price cut, basic PS3 model will cost 47,600 yen ($410), while it was originally planned for 59,800 yen ($515). Announced just a few days after Microsoft revealed its plans to release HD DVD player for Xbox 360 to match the PS3 Blu-ray technology, Sony seems to be competing against Xbox 360 also in price tags. The costs are pretty much the same in Japan, Xbox 360 with HD DVD player will cost around 49,600 yen ($427), making a mere $17 difference to PS3. This might give Sony a big boost and equalize with the problems with component manufacturing, pricing and delays.

PlayStation 3 will launch November 11 in Japan, November 19 in the United States, and as reported earlier European launch was delayed to March 2007.

  3. PS3 Cheaper in Japan But Not In US
Sony has confirmed that the, surprising, PS3 price drop announced last night for the Japanese launch will not affect the console's price for the US and European launches.

During his keynote address at the Tokyo Game Show, Sony Computer Entertainment President, Ken Kutaragi, announced that the new PS3 price 49,980 yen (USD 429 / EUR 335 / GBP 225). This brings the price of the Japanese 20 GB PS3 to 70 USD under that of its U.S. counterpart while the same European console will be over 85 Euro more expensive.

This price cut seems to be a reaction to a very negative reaction to the console by Japanese consumers and retailers. It seems the U.S. market has not concerned SCEA enough to announce a price cut. The Tokyo Game Show also had some good news for PS3 fans as it was confirmed that both the 20GB (USD 499) and the 60GB (USD 599) PS3's will feature an HDMI slot.

Now PS3 is a key issue for Blu-Ray acceptance but Blu-Ray will add cost to the PS3. I'm wondering if the XBOX army isn't sitting over the hill ready to pounce on PS3 if they stay tied to Blu-Ray as secondary marketing. If pressed, Sony would have to choose PS3 or Blu-Ray. They need PS3 and Blu-Ray to meet targets.

  7. What I'd like to know is why on Earth will it cost $100 (USD) more for a PS3 with a Hard Drive that only has an increased storage capacity of 40GB?

it is called capitalism. In other words, total greed

the more ps3 's sony sells - the more chance they will go broke -- or get taken over ....

    strange , but true ...

sony will lose 200$ - 400$ on every ps3 for at least two years and more likely three ...

they will only NOT lose money if you buy a HDMI cable from them (over a 100$) and few games and a few bluray disks and hopefully a bluray stand alone player ...

  11. Isn't game console is always a money lossing/break even bussiness. The real money came from the games ?

Maybe a member can explain this "bussiness model" better ?

  12. Yes, but as far as some of these major companies go (this includes Sony) they will milk it for every cent they can, and slightly over price it or push it knowing people will still buy it for the exaggerated price. Though this is not really neccessary for them to still make a killing with this system, that is where they border it on greed. They have more money then they know what to do with. However viewing it from the other side of the spectrum, this is a marvelous business practice

  15. Hey Singsing,
My post was in replying to how Sony profits on their system. Games alone can pull in their own weight depending on how good it is. Just look at gta and halo

sony does not profit on their system .... they lose money on every unit sold ,, in other words they will not make any money on the ps3 for almost 3 years (if then)

  17. A brand new Playstation 2 is $129.00, that includes controller, Motherboard, dvd drive, graphics chip, cpu, ram, cable, encolsure, warranty, and profit margin for the seller. There are no money in there for Sony.

The games is (are?) where all the console makers have been historically able to turn a profit with their consoles. As stated before, it's due to the licensing schemes they have - they DO get a cut of EVERY game sold for their consoles.

I'm not sure if it was mentioned in one of the links, but I read elsewhere that the games will cost $75-85 (via yen -> USD conversion; who knows what the real US price will end up being)..WAY too high in my opinion - it's going to cut down their market to only those who have way too disposable income (ie: adults and really spoiled kids).

Not exactly related to this thread, but apparently Nintendo is bucking the profit-losing trend w/ the upcoming Wii. I've read that they will actually make a *profit* on each console from the get-go. Various console maker issues aside, I don't really care too much - I'm more of a PC gamer..Never even owned a PS2, and pretty much the only reason I got a Playstation/psOne was because of the FF series. <<- /me wishes Sony would put out PC based FF games again (not just MMOs either).

Welcome to Australia......full price games here for xbox and ps2 are $90 and some 360 games are $110!!

Extreme and there are only a small handful of games I have ever bought at that price.

$When they drop below $60 I become interested.

    Sorry that was Aussie dollars.

As a chunk of our paypackets it is still very high, as our living standards are very similar but it costs us to import the games with a reduced valued dollar.
