  1. If you could live ANYWHERE, where would it be?

I'd like to live on a hilltop, surrounded by trees,
    overlooking a lake or river.

The Gulf Islands off the coast of B.C. It's where I grew up, and the views don't come better.

    I'll second this...

Of all the cities I've seen, Vancouver BC is probably about the most scenic you'll find - Singapore is a close second. Their problems with traffic (mostly) make them not so desirable to live in. The Gulf Islands are beautiful and not all that far away from big cities when you require their amenities.

A house in a hill with everything necessary to retire in the Dominican Republic would be nice. The problem is that I would need a truck load of cash to make this dream come true.

Just for the weekends, I would add this beach to the equation:

Visit - yes, live - no. Sorta like a lot of places you go on vacation, nice for a while but the novelty wears off.

I think if you were to live there then the "novelty" isn't the only thing to wear off...

3 years ago I would have said 'Right where I am'. I selected a nice piece of property in a rural town just outside of the city with the surrounding area zoned for agricultural. I literally built my own house with everything configured the way I wanted it. About 3 years ago they changed the zoning (over the wishes of everyone in the area), to high residential housing, but limited it to 30 acres so "no one would be interested in building on it". Within 6 months a developer bought 50 acres and started building an apartment complex (again against the wishes of everyone in the area). When township officials were questioned about the increased acreage they replied "That 30 acres was just an estimate. It was never meant as a hard zoning line." I no longer want to live here, but circumstances dictate that I have to stay for the forseeable future. Hopefully I'll be able to move before the buildings start going up immediately behind my property.

    I'm fond of British Columbia.
Then again, I'm pretty happy with the Hill Country in Texas.
There are some nice lakes out in East Texas too.

I prefer solitude, being away from the noise and bustle of civilization. I thoroughly enjoy my cabin in the UP on Lake Superior, but the neighboring lots are beginning to build so it's not as remote as it once was. If I could work from home (or not have to work at all) I'd probably go out into the middle of nowhere Alaska or Canada and have a place on a lake big enough for a seaplane.

I have always had a dream to live in a castle. I know they're cold and drafty affairs but that's certainly OK with me. Most all the proper castles/keeps I've seen were strategically placed which often means a substantial view.

If you've have tons-o-cash then Fiji is a viable answer...

Actually cash adds another level to the question: Where would you like to live if you have to maintain employment and where if you didn't.

Without work my answer is the same - BC Gulf Islands. With work I like where I am (Calgary), about a million people, good employment and Kananaskis is about 30 minutes away (Banff is about an hour).

I would like to live in a place that was not that hot in summer, and not that cold in winter. Also that had no cues for everything. No crowds of people all around. To have it all, I would ask for beautiful landscapes, too.

If I could afford it, I'd live in or around Albany, Western Australia:

Close to wine-growing and sheep-farming areas - and not really all that far from Perth (253 miles - or 414km). Broadband access, too (grin).

You just described Canmore/Banff... Althought can get a bit crowded at peak Summer/Winter.

Speaking of cold: Banff got 20cm of snow yesterday...

edit: I guess it depends on your definition of cold... It's warmer than Tuktuyaktuk
