I recently purchased a Samsung HDMI DVD player (model DVD-HD860) to go along with my Panasonic TC-26LX50 LCD TV. The TV is "High Def Ready" with a single HDMI port in the back and a manual which states it's cabalities of reaching 480p, 720p, and 1080i. Due to the size of the screen and resolution which it projects, I wasn't expecting to be viewing DVDs at 1080i, however it would seem that not even 720p works! Whenever I change the resolution, the DVD plays as normal, and then the picture turns to multicolored fuzz. It attempts to reconcile the problem, only to go back to fuzz and stay that way. The only working mode is 480p. While nice, I could just as easily use the component cables on my XBox360 and get a close to similar quality.

Is this player just crappy, and making my life uneasy, or is it the TV? Or is it something that I may be overlooking?

DVD resolution is 480P, so the DVD player and TV are working normally.

You can get an upconverting DVD player if you really feel you have to watch DVD content at 720P or 1080i, but there is no need.

There are other sources for your HDMI input besides a DVD player, such as a HD Cable box, in which case 720P or 1080i would be used.

    DVD is 720x480

Your HDTV LCD panel is native 1366x768. The HDTV accepts 720x480p and upscales it to 1366x768p for display. Done!.

Alternative is to have the DVD player upscale 720x480p to 1280x720p and then have the TV scale again to 1366x768.

Interlace DVDs are more complicated. See this
