in MacPro: Sony and Pionner DVD-R, pioneer won't read DVD's

i ahve a new MP
It came with a Sony DW-D150a its very noisy

I got a Pioneer DVR-11D rev 1.19 and finally by trial and error got that reader to open and close changing the PIN settings on the back that are different in number than the Sony

Toast recognizes it, Apple sys pprofile recognizes it but it does not seeem to spin the DVD's

is this a PIN setting issue? a firmware issue ( rev 1.19) does it need to be flashed? is it just DOA?

they run only 32 $ from new egg
