At work we use an exchange server and outlook is running all day. For personal accounts I use a small (free) app called nPOP (http://www.nakka.com) which checks my personal accounts.

In the days of always-on broadband, assuming you leave a browser or mailer utility window open that automatically checks every so many minutes, it's hard not to check for email. I leave my mailer window open whenever I'm using my computer - even if it's to do stuff offline. So actually, I don't check anything - my computer checks.

Outlook checks it every 5 minutes, so my vote is TOO OFTEN

I have 3 different e-mail addresses(all of which I use), so the total chacking all togetrh equals about once every few hours.

I always have MSN Messenger signed in (appear offline), so everytime I recieve an email I'm notified (which is about once or twice a day).

It checks for new messages every 5 minutes on 6 different accounts.

I also have one web-mail account that I usually check once a day.
