  1. Just looking for a good DURABLE printer for everyday use. I have the little Lexmark Z515 and my mom has a Dell printer/scanner and they aren't working well. Any recommendations for something under/around $100?

    Thanks

  2. Do you have a large university near where you live?

I recently got a Lexmark laser printer from the Duke University Surplus Store for $35!!! It prints 17 pages per minute and has works flawlessy. Even has a built-in network card for easy networking. A 15,000 page cartridge cost me $80. That will last a l-o-n-g time.

I stick to HP myself. Even my faxes are HP inkjets.

I buy refurbed ones or used ones. Craigslist should have many, or you can probably find some refurbishers locally.

Although this is out of your price range, I have a LaserJet 2200DN which was around $800 5 years ago, and the thing's a WORKHORSE! and probably costs one tenth per page what an inkjet costs. However, you can get laser printers for far less these days, as long as you don't need color.

Just about any laser is more economical than an inkjet, especially since most inkjets force you to use color, unless you go through the cumbersome ritual of going into the configuration and setting gray scale every time you print. I've encountered few inkjets that allow you to set grayscale as a default, and $30 for an ink cartridge that lasts maybe 500 pages is just insane.

If you wish to research printers, I suggest not only looking at the price of the printer, but the cost of consumables (toner, fusers, "maintenance kits", etc.) You'll probably find that you'll get a good, economical LASER printer for around what you're expecting to pay. The LaserJet 1018 looks like a good, entry-level laser printer.
