  1. They are many 1440x900 so called widesreen LCD monitors on the market. But almost all AGP/PCI Video cards will put out 1280x1024 video, but not 1440x900.

Are these LCD monitordesigned for laptop users primary ?

How does 280x1024 video look on 1440x900 monitor ? Since the video does not match the monitor native pitches !

With the correct drivers for the video card and monitor, you will be able to run at the LCD's native resolution. If you don't the image will be wider than it should (or compressed vertically - you choose the description you like), and the image will be fuzzy and indistinct. It all comes down to drivers. I see a lot of laptops that have been rebuilt (windows reinstall) that haven't had the correct drivers installed, and they look horrible. In every case, installing the correct drivers had restored the native resolution.

A general rule for all LCDs is that they only look good at their native resolution. Everything else is a compromise with lesser image quality. Doesn't matter if you try to use higher or lower resolutions.

I'm using mine off-res 1280x1024 DVI cause I haven't got around to installing the manufacturer's specific driver yet, looks OK except for Civilization where everybody got fatter.
A tip I heard somewhere, mebbe here, is that you may need to re-install the video card to get the 1440x900 res to show on the Display chart.

  4. Do you mean when windows detected a 1440x900 monitor, then it will install that option ?

  5. There should be a driver disc that came with the monitor that will give you full resolution. If not you can probably download the driver from the manufacterer's website. Updating your graphics card drivers may do it too.

  6. I though the availabled HxV video resolution, and refresh rate are designed in when the video card is released. If the video cards never designed with 1440x900 in mind, then It will never has that resolution. The user just have to use the next closest resolution to drivethe LCD monitor, and suffer the aliasing artifacts.

It depends on the specific card; check your manufacturer website for new drivers and/or ask their tech guys.

I'm not unhappy with mine- lots more screen real estate (for multiple windows), desk real estate, and 100W pwer savings, and the fonts look better to me too.

what I meant was that the 1440x900 driver may not 'activate' a new setting to the Windows Display control panel until the card is re-installed. that's what somebody said

I was the one who said in another thread that to enable the 1440x900 resolution uninstall the video card in the control panel then let windows reinstall the drivers. Then use the manufacturers cd to install the drivers for the widescreen lcd. This is what I did for the 2 pc's that use the Viewsonic 19 inch widescreen lcd monitor via a 2 port KVM switch.
