I hope this is the right forum for this... I've tried other forums for this problem, without success.

I have some DVDs that play in my computer, but won't play in standalone DVD players. When inserted into the players, a message comes up saying that the disc is not not a playable disc. I've tried ripping the disks and re-burning them, yet that didn't change the outcome.

While utilizing various programs, I noticed the DVD files for the discs. I'm wondering if reauthoring the DVD would make an effective change? If so, how do I reauthor a disc, and how do I know which files to switch/change/manipulate? If not, when is it apporopriate/neccessary to reauthor?

You are fron NTSC land. Although things are slowly changing, many US players/recorders are still resolutely NTSC only. It may be worth checking the discs to make sure they don't contain PAL video. While it is possible to convert from PAL to NTSC, it is usually a lot easier to get a PAL capable player.

If I reauthor, will that do anything? Will the resulting disc be able to have a more wide ranging playing ability?

Have you checked if they are PAL dvds? https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=299857&highlight=

Reauthor might help...but not if they are PAL and your player only supports NTSC.

Baldrick: No, sir... I don't know how. I'm thinking that the link you provided will be of assistance, so I'll try that. One other thing, would I check the actual disc itself or the .iso files?

guns1inger: I read another thread where you answered someone else, and you said, "I believe that folder2ISO is not recommended for DVD Video, but is fine for making ISO for data discs." Could you share with me more about this? When I first put the disc torether, I used folder2ISO, which I'm thinking may be why dvd players have problems with it. (at least for the one disc I put together that won't play... I still have to figure out about dvds that I've received from others that do the same)

Use ImgTools Classic when creating an ISO of VIDEO_TS/AUDIO_TS folders.

Baldrick: Thanks for the link! Something I read in there mentioned using PowerDVD to check if the disc is PAL. Since I already have this app loaded, I popped the disc in, played it, right clicked, went to Configurations/Information and I found ... "TV system: 625/50 (PAL)"

So, I take it that means the disc is PAL, and won't play in standalones. Is that right?

Now if this is the uncovering of the mystery of the unpredictable playing dvd, my next question is... Can this be changed? How do I change a DVD that is PAL to NTSC?

Also (this is also to guns1inger) would this have anything to do with me having made the .ISO with folder2ISO? or was the video already PAL?

I checked the other dvd that didn't have anything to do with making... and it's a PAL as well! I think that solves HALF of the problem (at least)!

I still need you alls assistance on the second half (PAL to NTSC).
Look to hear from you soon!

    Thanks!

  10. As steveryan's link mentions the best solution is a multi-system DVD player(OPPO,etc).
Converting a PAL DVD to NTSC is time consuming but you might try this guide:
    www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=221928
It's not foolproof but it's fast and easy.

I've tried all the steps above (multiple times)... with varying degrees of success. The closest I've gotten is 2 separate discs that would play in the players I used (one better than the other) however both discs still showed flaws. For instance, the markers showing what is being selected were completely out of place. Also there is this green digitized overlay/disruption that appears on the top and bottom of the screen. What would cause this & how do I get around it?

  13. save yourself some headbanging and just get a player that can be made region free and will play PAL DVDs into a ntsc format for a NTSC tv. Something like the phillips 5960.

I have a decent computer 3Ghz P4 HT and it still takes all night to convert a PAL DVD to NTSC. Or I can just pop it into the Phillips and enjoy.... hmmm.. Which one do you think I'm doing anymore?
