I'd go for the Pioneer dvr-111d myself, but I couldn't say if one was 'better' than the other.

I'd go for the Pioneer 111D instead of the Nec drive. If you want more comparisons go to the NEC & Pioneer forums at Cdfreaks.com. If the BENQ 1650 was a option I'd suggest that over the Pioneer 111D drive.

If DVD-RAM compatibility is important, go with the Pioneer. I have the 3550 and I love it. It doesn't bitset single-layer DVD+R, though with the Liggy's and Dee's firmware it will.

The only aspect of the Benq I miss is bitsetting on DVD+RW. Pioneer has bitsetting on +R (when using the hacked FW) and + R DL bitsetting is default with stock firmware and hacked.
High quality stable burns. UDMA4. What more can I say? I'm in love
From opinions at cdfreaks I came to the conclusion that NEC peaked in quality with the 3520. The 3550 - is decent - but not a fan favorite among those with an opinion. I concur that you should go to that site and take a read for yourself. But I would not get the BenQ dw1650. Now... if the older dw1640 or dw1620 were available then I'd have a harder time voting against BenQ. -
